Wolfsburg – Schalke

After finishing 2nd in the Bundesliga last season and qualifying for the Champions League, Schalke 04 are starting their participation in the league with a visit to Wolfsburg.

Wolfsburg had a pretty much a terrible last season. The Wolves were too close to relegation, playing in the relegation playoffs of the Bundesliga. Luckily for them, they managed to escape this unpleasant situation and keep their place in the elite division. But now they know that they can’t allow themselves to be so close to the edge. Wolfsburg’s goal this season is to stabilize their performance and at least move up to the middle of the league standings.

On the market the Wolves paid around 15 million euro to Stuttgart for the striker Daniel Ginczek, who shall increase the team’s firepower in attack. The club also signed another striker – the Dutchman Wout Weghorst, who was signed from AZ Alkmaar. These two new signings shall give Wolfsburg some more fresh options in attack and maybe the team will score more goals this season.

Schalke 04 had a very good last campaign in the Bundesliga. The Royal Blues were “best from the rest”, finishing after the champion Bayern Munich. For them it’s very important that they managed to return to the Champions League in such a convincing way. Now Schalke’s goal is to repeat this performance.

On the market the Royal Blues paid more than 20 million euro for two players, acquring the services of Mainz 05’s Suat Serdar and Real Madrid’s Omar Mascarell. They also signed Lille’s left back Hamza Mendyl and Hannover 96’s Salif Sane. These are some serious improvements, so let’s see how they will fit in Schalke’s squad.

Schalke 04 are favourites against Wolfsburg, even being away from home. But let’s see what Wolfsburg can offer in this new season.
